In 2023, Geoffrey Omara was a young man with limited livelihood options and a growing concern about environmental degradation in his community. Like many households in Gulu District, he faced challenges related to deforestation, soil erosion, and unreliable income sources.
Through Transform Minds Uganda (TMU), Geoffrey was selected to participate in a tree planting and environmental conservation initiative aimed at promoting sustainable livelihoods while restoring the environment. TMU supported him with 100 pine seedlings and 100 eucalyptus seedlings, along with practical training on proper land preparation, tree planting, and long-term tree management.
With guidance from TMU, Geoffrey prepared his land and planted the seedlings using recommended spacing and conservation techniques. He faithfully applied what he had learned—regular watering, weeding, and protecting the trees from animals and fire. His commitment and consistency led to a high survival rate and healthy growth of the trees.
Today, Geoffrey’s woodlot is thriving. What was once unused land has been transformed into a growing green asset that is contributing to environmental restoration in his community. The trees are helping to reduce soil erosion, improve air quality, and restore green cover. In the years ahead, the woodlot will also provide sustainable sources of timber, firewood, and income—strengthening Geoffrey’s household economic security.
Beyond the environmental and economic benefits, Geoffrey’s transformation has had a ripple effect. He has become a role model and advocate for environmental conservation, inspiring other youth and households in his community to engage in tree planting and climate-resilient practices. He now shares his experience openly, encouraging others to see tree growing not only as environmental protection, but also as a pathway to sustainable livelihoods.
Geoffrey’s story reflects the impact of targeted support combined with personal commitment. Through TMU’s intervention, he has grown from a beneficiary into an environmental steward and agent of positive change—demonstrating how small actions, when nurtured well, can lead to lasting transformation for people and the planet.
